the local area

An under-explored part of the world, the Pyrenees form a spectacular land barrier between France and Spain.

Only an hour from the cultural centre of Toulouse, we are in the historic Comminges region, near the medieval hilltop stronghold of Aurignac.

First settled in prehistoric times, and giving its name to Aurignacian culture, Aurignac is a now busy town overlooking the mountains with independent shops, a weekly market, cafes, restaurants and tourist office; walking and cycling routes to suit all levels and interests pass by the ancient ramparts and prehistoric shelters into the rolling Pyrenean foothills.

The Comminges is layered in history, from its ancient caves and Roman remains to the Romanesque and Gothic churches serving well worn pilgrim routes. Close to the Spanish border, the culture and cuisine are distinctive and the pace of life relaxed, yet all with easy access to the breathtaking hiking, paragliding, rafting and skiing of the spectacular Pyrenees.
